The Experiential Learning Imperative for Higher Education Leadership, Alignment, Partnership, and Refinement
Main Article Content
Abstract
Experiential learning, which encompasses several educational interventions and opportunities that encourage students to apply, integrate, reflect on, and publicly demonstrate their learning in authentic contexts, has moved from a promising practice to a strategic imperative for colleges and universities. In an era of heightened expectations around value and demonstrable outcomes, experiential learning offers a visible and evidence‑rich way to advance student success while potentially differentiating institutional identity. This article proposes a four‑part framework for championing and implementing experiential learning in higher education contexts: leadership, both strategic and distributed; alignment, both vertical and horizontal; partnership, advanced through collaboration and co-education; and refinement, realized through assessment‑driven improvement and innovation. Drawing on evidence-informed perspectives and practices, this commentary article includes ideas and issues to consider in offering experiential learning opportunities. It concludes with reflection questions; suggested actions for individuals, teams, and institutions; and common measures of success.
