All That Glitters Is Just Water
Abstract
All That Glitters Is Just Water is a darkly comedic, surreal narrative narrative that follows Gil a goldfish convinced he’s human as he navigates the monotony, anxieties, and existential spirals of life inside a tiny glass world. Through Gil’s daily routine, his sardonic inner voice Shellsea, and his loyal but quirky friend Milo, the story uses humor and absurdity to explore themes of identity, confinement, and the search for meaning in a place that offers none. The fishbowl, styled as a miniature city, becomes a metaphor for limited agency and the illusion of progress, while the unsettling SuShi bar and its cryptic chef highlight the story’s blend of whimsy and dread. As Gil pushes against the boundaries of his reality literally and psychologically the narrative examines how self-doubt and intrusive thoughts can become their own form of captivity. Balancing playful dialogue with emotional depth, the piece invites readers to reflect on the ways we build worlds to survive, the voices we depend on (or escape), and the fragile humor that keeps us swimming even when the water feels too small.
