Northridge Review Presents — Encore!: Discussion and Workshop with Miles Burks
“Encore!: Discussion and Workshop with Miles Burks” will feature a public discussion among Mr. Burks, Hanna Davis (CSUN student), and Sean Pessin (CSUN faculty) followed by a workshop on how members of the CSUN community can submit their own work for publication.
This discussion will emphasize Mr. Burks’ experience of having had his work purchased at auction by HarperAlley, a division under HarperCollins Children’s Books, which is due to be published in 2026. HarperCollins is one of the largest publishers of works in the English language, and learning about the process and experience of being published by one of “The Big Five” publishers will provide great insight into how students can break into the industry themselves. Encore! is about two childhood friends who have a falling out in middle school and who are brought back together in their senior year of high school. Reasons why Encore! is so appealing to this major publisher are the multiethnic cast of characters, the queer love story it is organized around, the 187,000 subscribers to Mr. Burks’ Webtoon page, and the 20 million views his comics have received on that platform. Mr. Burks’ industry experience can provide students with valuable insights into the creative process and process of submitting work for publication.
This event is co-sponsored by CSUN College of Humanities, the CSUN Department of English, and the CSUN Book Arts Lab.
