Don't Be a Chicken: Uncovering A Rare Case of Breakthrough Chicken Pox

Abstract

A rare case study of a 39 year old male who was diagnosed with chicken pox (primary Varicella). Physical and lab exams were conducted for CBC, CMP, TSH, ESR/CRP, and blood cultures. No growth at 48 hour culture, HIV, RPR, HSV PCR and Monkeypox PCR of lesions were negative. However, VZV PCR of lesions was positive. Comparison between Primary Varicella (Chicken Pox) and Herpes Zoster (Shingles) were conducted to treat the paitent. The paitent was determined to have a breakthrough primary varicella because no pain was presented.
