Directrices para autores/as

With the exception of creative works, authors are expected to follow the guidelines set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA). These guidelines provide a standardized format for presenting research and ideas in the social and behavioral sciences.

Here are some basic author guidelines for writing an academic essay using APA guidelines:

Formatting

  • Use 12-point Times New Roman font throughout the essay.
  • Include a title page with the title of the essay, your name, and institutional affiliation.
  • Include a running head at the top of each page (except the title page) with a shortened version of the title (50 characters or less) and the page number.

Example: Running head: EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON SELF-ESTEEM

Structure

  • Start with an introduction that presents the topic and research question or thesis statement.
  • Include a literature review that summarizes the relevant research on the topic.
  • Present your research methods and results.
  • Conclude with a discussion of your findings and their implications.

Example introduction: In recent years, the impact of social media on individuals' self-esteem has become a topic of interest in the field of psychology. While some studies have found a positive correlation between social media use and self-esteem, others have found negative effects. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between social media use and self-esteem among college students.

Citations

  • Use in-text citations to give credit to the sources of your information and ideas.
  • Include a reference list at the end of the essay that lists all sources cited in the text.

Example in-text citation: According to Jones (2019), social media use has been linked to decreased self-esteem.

Example reference list: Jones, S. (2019). The effects of social media on self-esteem. Journal of Social Psychology, 152(2), 185-193.

Language

  • Use clear and concise language.
  • Avoid using slang, jargon, or colloquialisms.
  • Use active voice when possible (e.g. "The participants completed the survey" instead of "The survey was completed by the participants").

Example sentence: The study found that social media use was negatively correlated with self-esteem (Jones, 2019).

Overall, keep in mind that when writing an academic essay using APA guidelines, it is important to follow the prescribed formatting, structure, and language guidelines to ensure that your research is presented clearly and effectively. By adhering to these guidelines, you can create a professional and polished essay that showcases your research and ideas in the best possible light.

Research Papers

Research papers should present a well-defined question that is answered at the end. Regardless of whether the research question is answered or not, authors should provide a solution for the issue addressed throughout the paper, and address anything the paper did not address which can be addressed in further research. Additionally, if the research question is not answered, the conclusion should offer an explanation as to why the research could not answer the question.

The paper should include/cite external sources (primary and/or secondary sources) and any data the research has collected utilizing APA 7 for references.

The paper should be formatted according to the guidelines in the “Universal Guidelines” section. Additionally, authors should label sections clearly as Introduction, Literature Review/Historical Context, Findings, Conclusion, References

Papers are limited to 8,000 words including references.

Opinion/Persuasive Essays

These submissions should include no direct quotations. The only citations should be there to support specific evidence, such as statistics. If you choose to submit a persuasive/opinion essay then we are seeking papers written from personal and/or observed experience. As stated in the title, these essays express the authors’ personal opinions on the topic, however the author should not shy away from using theory or sources to support their arguments. These essays should not include sections and all sources should be cited in the ‘References’ section ONLY.

Papers are limited to 4,000 words including references.
