Societal Perceptions of White vs. Black Perpetrators of Crime as Shown Through Media Representation
Abstract
This paper uses content analysis research method to analyze the way media representation of Black vs White perpetrators can impact our understanding of the cases, crimes and individuals themselves. I analyzed language use, three documentaries and news footage in order to assess the manner in which Black vs White perpetrators cases are represented in the media. My documentary subjects included Ted Bundy, Wayne Williams and O.J. Simpson, the latter who was included in order to include the facets of race and social status in this media representation.
