Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

The journal Alba de América accepts academic essays and unpublished articles on Hispanic American literature. Manuscripts are reviewed by members of the Editorial Board and other associated external readers. The content of the articles is the sole responsibility of the author. Alba de América is not responsible for the veracity and authenticity of each published work. The journal is published annually, although manuscripts may be incorporated as they are approved.

In its digital version, Alba de América does not publish creative literary texts. For such works, please contact the Instituto Literario y Cultural Hispánico (ILCH) at ilchja@aol.com.

Specifications

1. The most current MLA Style Manual (9th edition) must be followed.
2. The maximum number of pages is 20, including end notes and the Works Cited page.
3. The manuscript must include a brief summary, which does not exceed 250 words, and include five keywords.
4. Paragraphs longer than one page are difficult to follow, break extremely long paragraphs where appropriate.
5. Images: If the manuscript is accepted, the author is responsible for obtaining all necessary permissions for the included images. Permission for images must be in writing and sent to the journal's email address. Likewise, all images must be correctly cited on the Works Cited page.
6. It is the author's responsibility to verify the accuracy of all cited material.

MLA Style Details
• The font to be used is Times New Roman; size 12 pt.; and the text should be double-spaced throughout.
• The document margins are to be one inch on all sides, and the first line of each paragraph should be indented one half-inch from the left margin. The tab key should be used instead of pressing the space bar five times.
• Bibliographic data is not placed in footnotes, but on a separate page at the end of the manuscript titled "Works Cited". It is not titled "Bibliography".
• Punctuations marks (periods, commas, semi colon, colon must be outside Quotation marks (""). Note the way the quotation marks were used in the bullet point above).
• The titles for all articles are to be enclosed in quotation marks, not in italics.
• Book titles are in italics.
• Book titles within another title do not have italics: Psicoanálisis y literatura en Cien años de soledad.
• When citing articles by other authors not mentioned in the citation introduction, use parentheses with the author's last name and the corresponding page number.
• Endnotes should be no more than 15 and should be placed on a separate page before the Works Cited page.
• All illustrations, figures, and tables must be named and numbered, and properly placed within the text, rather than at the end of the article.
