Abstract

Professor David Reyes was a well-respected and much-beloved member of the Cal State LA English Department through the summer of 2014. He dedicated two decades to the department, first as a graduate student and then as a lecturer. He specialized in helping first-year students, especially those from underserved backgrounds, improve their writing skills and reach their academic and career goals. In keeping with David’s commitment to developing student writers, the Cal State LA English Department hosts an annual essay contest for students enrolled in ENGL 1005AB first-year writing courses. Each year, the English Department Composition Committee awards distinction to three essays demonstrating exemplary college-level writing. Text & Type congratulates the winners of the 2022 David Reyes Essay Contest: Letty Flores, “Queer Couples in Visual Media” (1st Place); Lauren Shane, “Taking Notes, the Write Way” (2nd Place); and Tupou Ulufonua, “Diversity and Representation in the Media” (3rd Place).
