Toward a New Chicanidad: New Tribalism, Environmental Justice, and China
Abstract
This article explores how the trip of environmental activist mark! Lopez to a Clean Air Asia conference in Beijing, China, serves as a case study for understanding the theoretical framework of "new tribalism" and its application to a transnational Chicanidad. Lopez, a representative for the East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice (EYCEJ) and the Moving Forward Network (MFN), was invited to share his experiences with clean air initiatives in Los Angeles, particularly those around the San Pedro Port Complex. The conference organizers were specifically interested in the policy changes achieved in California, such as the California Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory Program, that have led to lower air pollution.
