Ethnic Studies and Good Teaching: A Research Summary

Abstract

This article provides a brief context for Ethnic Studies (ES) and summarizes research findings on the positive affects ES courses have on students. Research-based criteria for effective Ethnic Studies courses are examined and applied to sample curricula from two California school districts.

Michelle Jewett, Teacher Education Faculty, Central New Mexico Community College

Dr. Michelle Jewett is full-time faculty in the Education Department at Central New Mexico Community College. She has over twenty years of experience teaching secondary and post-secondary students. Michelle studies anti-bias curriculum and how it relates to teacher education and whiteness.
